It is also the basis of the middle school movement that we hold dear, which originated as a challenge to the status quo of junior high schools. As progressive educators, we promote shifts in education to bring more equitable outcomes, more humane learning spaces, and expanded opportunities for students to analyze and act to bring greater justice to our society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We promote equity through practices represented in our toolkits such as positive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/community-culture-toolkit\/#.ZAd3vuzMLt0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community and Culture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/student-identity\/#.ZAeAjOzMLt0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> work for inclusiveness and belonging; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/proficiency-based-education\/#.ZAd3UuzMLt0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proficiency-Based Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to focus on growth and cross-curricular skills like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/essential-skills-dispositions-toolkit\/#.ZAd4CezMLt0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Essential Skills and Dispositions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/plps-to-know-students-well-personal-learning-plans-toolkit-2\/#.ZAd3duzMLt0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personalized Learning Plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/student-led-conferences-3\/#.ZAd3iOzMLt0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student Led Conferences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that enhance student ownership; and engaging pedagogies like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/project-based-learning-2\/#.ZAd3HezMLt0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project Based Learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/service-learning\/#.ZBnBFezMLt0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Service Learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And an important shift in the middle school movement over the last decade is the recognition that equity needs to be explicitly centered in order to be effectively pursued. While it may be a driver behind the work, and there are important practices that promote it, equity itself demands to be named, analyzed, researched, learned, taught, and applied.
