{"id":1008,"date":"2014-05-01T12:06:38","date_gmt":"2014-05-01T16:06:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/?p=1008"},"modified":"2022-04-13T13:53:59","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T17:53:59","slug":"math-middle-schoolers-real-world-relevance-infographic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/math-middle-schoolers-real-world-relevance-infographic\/","title":{"rendered":"Math, middle schoolers and real-world relevance (infographic)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 13px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; background-color: #ffffff; float: none;\">I consider myself an infographic enthusiast, and as a former middle school math teacher\u00a0<span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 13px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; background-color: #ffffff; float: none;\">when <\/span>the infographic below<i style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 13px; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; background-color: #ffffff;\"> <\/i><span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 13px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; background-color: #ffffff; float: none;\">was passed on to me I was of course interested:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201111201307\/http:\/\/www.studygeek.org\/other_lessons\/math-relevance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160417090330\/http:\/\/img2.studygeek.org\/math_relevance.jpg\" alt=\"An infographic showing the types of connections middle school students make about math and the real world\" width=\"552\" height=\"1217\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 13px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; background-color: #ffffff; float: none;\">I<\/span><span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 13px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; background-color: #ffffff; float: none;\">t was encouraging to see 7 out of 10 students liked math, but out of 1000 surveyed students, that means there are about 300 that don\u2019t; and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><i style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 13px; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; background-color: #ffffff;\">that<\/i><span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 13px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; background-color: #ffffff; float: none;\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>isn\u2019t so encouraging.\u00a0 Scrolling down to Top Favorite Subjects, I was again hopeful when seeing math ranked third. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 13px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; background-color: #ffffff; float: none;\">While that alone was pleasing to a former math teacher, I was also excited to see that P.E. and art ranked one and two respectively.\u00a0 I\u2019m a firm believer that exercise boosts learning, and I don\u2019t think I need to make a case for the connections between art, creativity, and math.
