But it&#8217;s so rewarding for students and valuable to the community, and most of all, easy to get started with.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What is service learning, anyway?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6285\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6285\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6285 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/servicelearning3ways-793x1024.jpg\" alt=\"servicelearning3ways\" width=\"660\" height=\"852\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6285\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">created by Katy Farber on Easel.ly<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Service learning is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a learning tool to empower students to solve problems in their own communities, or even globally;<\/li>\n<li>a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience;<\/li>\n<li>a method of teaching\/learning that challenges students to identify, research, propose, and implement solutions to real needs in their school community as part of their curriculum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What does service learning really look like?<\/h2>\n<p>Students learn about challenges in their own communities and beyond, and devise a plan in teams to work toward solutions. It can be in any topic, include Common Core and district goals, while promoting student voice and problem solving.<\/p>\n<h2>How is service learning different than project-based learning?<\/h2>\n<p>Both of these pedagogies, at their very best (think\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bie.org\/blog\/gold_standard_pbl_essential_project_design_elements\">Gold Standard PBL<\/a>, and Shelley Billig\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/marylandpublicschools.org\/programs\/Documents\/Service-Learning\/K12_SL_SQP.pdf\">high quality service learning<\/a>), have a lot in common. They both invite students to explore their own interests; ask relevant and meaningful questions; engage in prolonged inquiry, research and reflection, assessment and feedback;\u00a0and ask students to create something that is of service to the world and share it with an authentic audience. \u00a0One big difference is that PBL can be a simulation or model, where service learning is rooted in direct action, planned by students. (from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bie.org\/blog\/the_best_service_learning_is_like_the_best_pbl\">this post at the Buck Institute!<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h2>But how do you do service learning?<\/h2>\n<p>C&#8217;mon. Let&#8217;s do this together.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Reflect. <\/strong>Is service learning, project based learning, or community service happening already at your school? Brainstorm a list of what is already happening. See what you can extend, enhance, or begin with.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Establish goals.<\/strong> What are some goals for service your team has in mind. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased engagement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Short or long term projects? Cultivating leadership, or fighting bullying? Brainstorm possible outcomes and goals.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Uncover possible problems for students to explore.<\/strong> Brainstorm possible areas of problems in the school or community that could be discovered by students. Where can they engage and begin to plan?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Find community partners.<\/strong> (not as scary as it seems): What <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">community partners<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exist? Who could be your allies? If new to a school, find a <em>community guru<\/em> (usually the administrative assistant or custodian) who knows the history of the school and many people in the community. This is a critical resource for materials, history, ideas and connections. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider bringing this person coffee.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Brainstorm.<\/strong>\u00a0A list of possible projects in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">possible classes, subjects, or integrated project times<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0Genius hours can also be expanded to have a service component.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Plan:<\/strong> See this service learning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151123010502\/http:\/\/www.generationon.org:80\/files\/flat-page\/files\/iparde_brainstorming_1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">planning template and checklist,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> portfolio cover sheet, student timeline, and reflection ideas for inspiration.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Ponder authentic sharing opportunities. <\/strong>Think about how you want to <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">create authentic sharing opportunities\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with and for the community (expos, learning fairs, presentations, showcases). What would work best in your schedule and school context?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Consider flexible grouping<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> for the project.<\/strong> Service learning teams usually work best with 3-4 team members.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Design reflection opportunities.<\/strong> Reflection is a critical part of service learning. It is where the learning often takes place and can become part of your formative assessment.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See these <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ccel-app.umn.edu\/info\/reflection.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reflection question ideas.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Organize the project.<\/strong> You can <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bie.org\/object\/tools\/project_planner\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use this tool from BIE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to plan it (you have to create an account, it\u2019s free, and the site has fabulous resources).\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or visit this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151123010502\/http:\/\/www.generationon.org:80\/files\/flat-page\/files\/iparde_brainstorming_1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">template and resource<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to see if it might work for you and your students. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1TEbDatbyFzb2atx6R8iN2LfPyTYtDRjRsC-MHAETZeY\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is the Google Doc format so you can fill it in: 6 steps to service\/project based learning.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Dive deeper.<\/strong> My book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/9792254-change-the-world-with-service-learning\">Change the World with Service Learning<\/a> is loaded with resources, examples, project ideas and rubrics teachers can adapt and use right away.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why do service learning?<\/h2>\n<p>The benefits are well documented.
