{"id":11824,"date":"2017-02-24T09:02:46","date_gmt":"2017-02-24T13:02:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/?p=11824"},"modified":"2017-02-24T17:00:10","modified_gmt":"2017-02-24T21:00:10","slug":"fighting-fake-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/fighting-fake-news\/","title":{"rendered":"4 resources for fighting fake news"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Teaching news literacy in the social media age<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/?s=digital+citizenship&amp;submit=Search#.WK8s7bGZOHo\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8369\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/digital_citizenship.jpg\" alt=\"digital citizenship and students online\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>We&#8217;ve been hearing a lot lately about the problem of fake news stories and how they might impact our impressions of the world. Imagine: if it&#8217;s hard for adults to spot fake news stories, then how hard is it for students?<\/p>\n<p>Turns out: <strong>VERY HARD<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look at some resources for helping students determine when a source is truly credible or not.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What&#8217;s the problem?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sheg.stanford.edu\/upload\/V3LessonPlans\/Executive%20Summary%2011.21.16.pdf\">A recent study from Stanford University<\/a> (pdf) indicates that middle, high school and college students are easily misled about news and information coming in through various social media channels. According to the study authors, &#8220;When it comes to evaluating information that flows through social media channels, [students] are easily duped.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 4\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>And according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2016\/11\/23\/503129818\/study-finds-students-have-dismaying-inability-to-tell-fake-news-from-real\">this NPR article<\/a>, more than 80 percent of middle schoolers believe that &#8216;sponsored content&#8217; are real news stories.<\/p>\n<h4>Why is this a problem?<\/h4>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Michael Lynch, a philosopher who studies technological change, observed that the Internet is \u201cboth the world\u2019s best fact- checker and the world\u2019s best bias confirmer\u2014often at the same time.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s that second part that&#8217;s concerning to many teachers. Our job is to challenge students&#8217; (and our own) biases during the time when student brains are the most open to new perspectives, new ideas and new information. But the social media age has just made that job a little harder.<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s load up on some resources to help you teach your students to find accurate information, manage their social media feeds and make good choices about what to share.<\/p>\n<h2>4 Resources for teaching about fake news<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Analyze fake news stories: what are the tip-offs?<\/h3>\n<p>PBS Newshour has released <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/extra\/lessons_plans\/lesson-plan-how-to-teach-your-students-about-fake-news\/\">this lesson plan geared for students in grades 7-12.<\/a> In it, students explore the benefits and drawbacks of schools blocking access to certain sites as they relate to this issue, and they analyze the most widely shared fake news stories for clues.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11862\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11862\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/extra\/lessons_plans\/lesson-plan-how-to-teach-your-students-about-fake-news\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11862 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/fighting_fake_news-1024x545.jpg\" alt=\"fighting fake news\" width=\"660\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/fighting_fake_news.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/fighting_fake_news-300x160.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/fighting_fake_news-768x409.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/fighting_fake_news-619x329.jpg 619w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11862\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Real lesson plan on fake news from PBS Newshour.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Make it real:<\/strong> follow up work with this lesson plan by drafting two lists of 10 news stories talking about your local or state community. In each list, grab a couple true stories from the local newspaper and make up the rest. Give one list as a pre-test and the other after students work through the PBS Newshour lesson plan.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Examine what makes false news so compelling<\/h3>\n<p>Another great resource comes to us from the School Library Journal. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/sljournal\/news-literacy\/\">Their Pinterest board <\/a>features many great links and images about helping students learn to recognize fake news. It features gems like<a href=\"http:\/\/ed.ted.com\/lessons\/how-false-news-can-spread-noah-tavlin\"> this lesson <\/a>and video from TedEd:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How false news can spread - Noah Tavlin\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cSKGa_7XJkg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another helpful video<a href=\"http:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2016\/12\/video-spotting-fake-news\/\"> (and post)<\/a> is here by Factcheck.org. This one explores the concept of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/blog\/science-choice\/201504\/what-is-confirmation-bias\">confirmation bias<\/a>, which could be a helpful concept for students to explore in our current society.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to Spot Fake News - FactCheck.org\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AkwWcHekMdo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>3 from the New York Times<\/h2>\n<p>The New York Times has published three helpful articles for teachers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The most general lesson is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/01\/19\/learning\/lesson-plans\/evaluating-sources-in-a-post-truth-world-ideas-for-teaching-and-learning-about-fake-news.html\">Evaluating Sources in a \u2018Post-Truth\u2019 World: Ideas for Teaching and Learning About Fake News<\/a>. This post is chalk full of tweets, links, tip sheets, graphics, and lesson plans about how to tackle this issue. This article does have several references to the president and recent tweets of his that have been deemed false, so keep this is mind for any lesson planning or discussion.<\/li>\n<li>In another helpful take on the issue, they published a STEM-focused piece on the health claims made by certain sources and how to tell if those are true: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/01\/05\/learning\/lesson-plans\/chocolate-found-to-stave-off-death-analyzing-the-scientific-evidence-behind-health-headlines.html\">\u2018Chocolate Found to Stave Off Death!\u2019 Analyzing the Scientific Evidence Behind Health Headlines<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Lastly, <a href=\"https:\/\/mobile.nytimes.com\/2017\/01\/26\/learning\/lesson-plans\/ideas-for-ells-finding-reliable-sources-in-a-world-of-fake-news.html?_r=0&amp;referer=\">in a post written specifically for teachers of English Language Learners<\/a> (ELL), Larry Ferlazzo gives teachers clear ways to help ELL students decipher fake news stories, including this helpful list of news articles at different reading levels:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsinlevels.com\/\">News in Levels<\/a> and the Smithsonian\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/tweentribune.com\/\">Tween Tribune<\/a> provide articles about current events that can be read on multiple levels of text complexity depending on students\u2019 English proficiency.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/learningenglish.voanews.com\/\">Learning English<\/a> from the Voice of America provides texts and videos about current events that are also designed to help students learn English.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/youngzine.org\/\">Youngzine<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsround\">Newsround<\/a> from the BBC both provide regularly updated news articles designed to be specifically more accessible to young readers.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/newsmap.jp\/\">Newsmap<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newser.com\/\">Newser<\/a> both provide short news summaries in visually engaging formats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>4. Get this discussion out into the open<\/h2>\n<p>One immediately helpful way to address this issue is to share some graphics with students that can help them learn to check if a story is fake news. It also teaches students the various categories of fake news so students can learn to identify what they are seeing.<\/p>\n<h2>More resources for fighting fake news:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Find and use a lesson plan from the above resources.<\/li>\n<li>Share and discuss the graphics and videos included here.<\/li>\n<li>Challenge your students to create infographics or visuals to use to teach other students about this issue.<\/li>\n<li>Find articles and use the guides and visuals to determine if the news is fake.
