{"id":13647,"date":"2017-09-24T15:18:31","date_gmt":"2017-09-24T19:18:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/?p=13647"},"modified":"2018-04-19T15:02:40","modified_gmt":"2018-04-19T19:02:40","slug":"courage-lives-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/courage-lives-on\/","title":{"rendered":"Courage lives on"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-13318\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/everydaycourage.png\" alt=\"#everydaycourage\" width=\"126\" height=\"126\" \/><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">This fall, we&#8217;ve been talking \u00a0about everyday courage in schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve <a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/laying-the-groundwork-for-effective-teaching-teams\/\">written about the courage it takes to start a new team,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/how-to-use-google-docs-get-students-talk\/\">using technology to open up communication with students<\/a> and to open up our practice. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve shared examples about how teachers are showing up, engaging in <a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/talking-about-race-in-vermont-schools\/#.WcAhx3fMxSw\">hard conversations about race<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/ways-vermont-educators-are-sharing-their-practice\/#.WcAh8nfMxSw\">their own practice<\/a>, about <a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/in-the-face-of-negative-feedback\/#.WcAiDHfMxSw\">getting negative feedback<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/sharing-our-work-as-educators\/#.WcAi2XfMz2R\">sharing our work and selves with others. <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve heard about how students are leading the way when given the support at school to do so: working for acceptance, equality and identity and systems that let every voice be heard.\u00a0<\/span>Here are three themes we&#8217;ve seen emerge.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13678 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_0105-e1506349940322-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_0105-e1506349940322.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_0105-e1506349940322-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/IMG_0105-e1506349940322-619x825.jpg 619w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Vulnerability<\/h3>\n<p>When we show up each day, and be ourselves with students, and ask them for feedback about projects, how the class should run, about what they want to write about, and how they want to make a difference in the world, we share power. We show them that we are not the holders to the keys to the kingdom. That we are all equal and deserving.<\/p>\n<p>When we model our own mistakes and learning, we show them we are human, and that we are not on a pedestal that will soon fall. We are all learning together, each day, the best we can. This is a vulnerability and transparency sandwich of bravery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Bravery<\/h3>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The #everydaycourage of starting a Queer-Straight Alliance\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iy3grN0pwSw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Our students show bravery, like the LGBTQ club featured in Life Legeros&#8217;s post on the Queer Straight Alliance at Crossett Brook. They show us how to be brave in the face of bigotry and stereotyping. Teachers are brave when they privilege student voice, especially those from a vastly difference life experience than their own, by listening and helping to make sure their voices are heard by others.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers are connecting to each other and to the wider world more, too, walking into the murky waters of identity, race and politics with their students in the wake of violence and \u00a0division in this country. Teachers are at the forefront and are leading the change we need to create more engaged, civic minded, compassionate citizens who know how to navigate complex and dynamic problems and situations.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is messy, challenging work.
