{"id":15564,"date":"2018-05-07T04:16:51","date_gmt":"2018-05-07T08:16:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/?p=15564"},"modified":"2019-02-13T15:06:03","modified_gmt":"2019-02-13T19:06:03","slug":"students-blogging-for-an-authentic-audience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/students-blogging-for-an-authentic-audience\/","title":{"rendered":"Students blogging for an authentic audience"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Getting connected: online &amp; with community members<\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-15660\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/student_voice.jpg\" alt=\"student-led short story unit\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/student_voice.jpg 150w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/student_voice-32x32.jpg 32w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/student_voice-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/student_voice-64x64.jpg 64w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/student_voice-96x96.jpg 96w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/student_voice-128x128.jpg 128w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>What if there was a way to spend less time grading your students\u2019 writing, while also providing a valuable writing experience for them?<\/p>\n<p>What if there was a way to bring interested, wise community members into your classroom on a regular basis? \u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think I discovered a way: student blogs with readers from the local community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Allow me to back up.<\/h2>\n<p>This year, I had planned to teach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/4671.The_Great_Gatsby?ac=1&amp;from_search=true\">The Great Gatsby<\/a> to a small group of 9th and 10th graders.<\/p>\n<p>However, given the political climate we\u2019re living in, I shifted.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I chose to teach the new young adult novel by Angie Thomas, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/32075671-the-hate-u-give?ac=1&amp;from_search=true\">The Hate U Give<\/a>, which provides a rich platform to discuss issues around race and injustice. The protagonist is an African-American teenager who experiences her (black) male (unarmed) friend killed by a white cop, so the novel\u2019s themes include racism, identity\/code-switching, female friendship, and sustaining community, among others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/4671.The_Great_Gatsby?ac=1&amp;from_search=true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15567 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/32075671-198x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/32075671-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/32075671.jpg 314w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Moving beyond the &#8220;Page on a Passage&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>As I planned the unit, I decided I wanted something other than the usual brief reading response assignment that I call, \u201cPage on a Passage.\u201d I wanted a writing task that would be authentic, that would still be rooted in textual response, and that would allow for rich discussions. I decided to ask students to create individual blogs that would be read by community members. It turned out to be a wonderful opportunity for students to practice tech skills, writing, and best of all, communicate with a more authentic audience.<\/p>\n<h2>Here are the steps I took to get this project underway:<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact adults who like to read and who might enjoy reading student writing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Send a mass email to all of these adults (bcc works best). \u00a0Give them a sense of the time commitment, the novel\u2019s content, and general expectations as a reader. \u00a0I call their role: \u201can engaged consumer.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you get responses from community members, make a chart to make a list of readers, then assign a student to each adult.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alert your students and give them clear guidelines for blogs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help students create their blogs (I used Blogger).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then write an introductory email to all readers once you have them on board; share the chart with student blog links.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write prompts for the students\u2019 blog entries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019ve assigned a blog post, send email reminders to the community readers. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thank the community readers (repeatedly).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>In the four-week unit, I assigned four blog posts.<\/h2>\n<p>Each one asked students to use the recently assigned chapters to comment on a theme or a concept we\u2019d learned (like double consciousness) and often to take it further and connect it to their own lives.<\/p>\n<h3>Here\u2019s one blog post prompt:<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;One recurring theme in The Hate U Give is the power of the voice.<\/p>\n<p>In this blog post, you will be asked to find a passage from the reading that you completed for Friday (2\/2) or Monday (2\/5) that exemplifies this theme. Be sure to quote a section from the book (remember to include the page number) and clearly explain what this has to do with the power of voice.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is the message that we are being told about the voice?<\/li>\n<li>Why is it important?<\/li>\n<li>Do you agree?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Next, connect this theme with your life.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is one time that you have spoken up against something that you felt was wrong, or for something that you believed in?<\/li>\n<li>Have you ever stayed silent when you wish you could have spoken up?&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>In general, I was very pleased with this project, and I would definitely do it again.<\/h2>\n<p>At first, I had some concerns that the community readers weren\u2019t familiar with The Hate U Give, but this proved to not matter so much. In some cases, the students\u2019 responses even inspired the adults to read the book.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, this communication between one student blogger and his adult reader was honest and fruitful.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15570\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-27-at-10.56.07-AM-e1524843220131.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1490\" height=\"626\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I was also concerned that the adult readers wouldn\u2019t have too much to say, especially if a student didn\u2019t give them too much to go on. But this fear proved to be inconsequential as well, as I was thrilled that the readers gave all kinds of responses &#8212; from simple encouragement to relevant quotes from their own reading.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15571\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-27-at-11.31.06-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-27-at-11.31.06-AM.png 1024w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-27-at-11.31.06-AM-300x111.png 300w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-27-at-11.31.06-AM-768x285.png 768w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-27-at-11.31.06-AM-619x230.png 619w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I loved that my students were hearing from new people, with their own fresh perspectives and questions:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15572\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-27-at-11.31.46-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1672\" height=\"834\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-27-at-11.31.46-AM.png 1672w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-27-at-11.31.46-AM-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-27-at-11.31.46-AM-768x383.png 768w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-27-at-11.31.46-AM-1024x511.png 1024w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Screen-Shot-2018-04-27-at-11.31.46-AM-619x309.png 619w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Even with the authentic audience, I decided to assess the students\u2019 blog posts, just to keep them accountable.<\/h2>\n<p>I used a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1Jny_s5sPsB0CfgGwFpomrktvdB5R_nKCp16T6x3MLYU\/edit\">simple 3-column rubric <\/a>to quickly assess substance of their reflection, connective thinking, and timeliness of their blog posts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1Jny_s5sPsB0CfgGwFpomrktvdB5R_nKCp16T6x3MLYU\/edit\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15687\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/blogrubric.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/blogrubric.jpg 1018w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/blogrubric-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/blogrubric-768x373.jpg 768w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/blogrubric-619x301.jpg 619w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, this blogging led to an efficient, comfortable process for sharing each other\u2019s responses to the novel. \u00a0Especially with a group of introverted students who tended to get quiet in class discussions, it was helpful to use some class time to read and comment on each other\u2019s blogs.<\/p>\n<h2>So, sometimes (just sometimes) it helps to figure out how you can step out of the role of reader, and find others who have a fresh perspective.<\/h2>\n<p>If I did this again, I would expand the blog sharing to another classroom &#8212;
