Just like everyone in the world is on a journey. And we don\u2019t see 2020 as some sort of hard and fast date.&#8221;\u00a0 However, regardless of a deadline, we should remain focused on centering equity as we implement personalized learning. Equity is at the heart of this state policy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/vermont-act-77\/\">Whether you are well on you way or just starting work on the three pillars<\/a> keeping equity at the forefront of education work is a moral imperative. And here are three resources to help in your journey.<\/p>\n<h5>What do *you* mean by equity?<\/h5>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190305192846\/http:\/\/nationalequityproject.org:80\/about\/equity\">National Equity Project\u00a0<\/a> defines it as &#8220;each child receives what they need to develop to their full academic and social potential.&#8221; Furthermore, they offer that moving toward it involves:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Ensuring equally high outcomes for all participants in our educational system. Removing the predictability of success. Or failures that currently correlates with any social or cultural factor.<\/li>\n<li>Interrupting inequitable practices, examining biases. And creating inclusive multicultural school environments for adults and children.<\/li>\n<li>Discovering and cultivating the unique gifts, talents and interests that every human possesses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sounds simple in theory; challenging in practice.<\/p>\n<h5>3 structures for centering equity<\/h5>\n<h6>1. Equity audits<\/h6>\n<p>Equity audits help examine us examine gaps in opportunity. Even more, they identify solutions to addressing those gaps.<\/p>\n<p>First and foremost, Teaching Tolerance recommends using the equity audits from the <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/maec.org\/res\/tools\/\">Mid-Atlantic Equity Consortium<\/a>. You can choose the right grain-size for your work. Everything from systems level to classroom\/teacher level audits. And they&#8217;re robust!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Another resource: the <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.education.ne.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/D_Statements_to_Include.pdf\">The School-Wide Cultural Competence Observation Checklist<\/a> (.pdf) They arrange questions into the following categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Community &amp; Parents<\/li>\n<li>School Policy &amp; Practice<\/li>\n<li>Classroom &amp; Teacher<\/li>\n<li>Student<\/li>\n<li>Curriculum &amp; Instruction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Along those same lines? The VT Agency of Education&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/fpg.unc.edu\/sites\/fpg.unc.edu\/files\/resources\/presentations-and-webinars\/Tools%20and%20Checklists%20to%20Support%20Implementation%20of%20the%20Vermont%20Guiding%20Principles.docx\">tools and checklists to support implementation of the Vermont Guiding Principles.<\/a> The AOE lists resources in the following categories:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Frameworks<\/li>\n<li>Classroom\/Program Tools<\/li>\n<li>Individual Tools<\/li>\n<li>Family Engagement Tools<\/li>\n<li>Professional Development Tools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>2. Burlington in-service. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/VTed?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#VTed<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4svyQnVNiP\">pic.twitter.com\/4svyQnVNiP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Donna Macdonald (@dsmacdonald) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dsmacdonald\/status\/847789140695539713?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 31, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The framework encourages you to consider applying the following frames:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe ability to <\/span><b><i>Recognize <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even the subtlest biases and inequities.\u201d<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How are you engaging a variety of perspectives to help you recognize bias and inequity in your system?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What perspectives are missing?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe ability to <\/span><b><i>Respond <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">skillfully and equitably to biases and inequities in the immediate term.\u201d<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What steps are you taking to respond to bias and inequity?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who holds you accountable?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe ability to <\/span><b><i>Redress<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> biases and inequities by understanding and addressing them at their institutional roots.\u201d<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you examined your policies and procedures for bias?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who needs to be at the table to construct or revise policies so they are more likely to be bias free?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe ability to <\/span><b><i>Sustain <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">equity efforts even in the face of discomfort or resistance.\u201d<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you communicate your equity efforts?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What values help you stand firm when the going gets rough?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>3. Examine your own practice<\/h5>\n<p>The most important resource by far, on this list, is <strong>you<\/strong>. Don&#8217;t underestimate your own power as a change agent. Push your thinking. Stay informed. Find ways to reflect. Collect feedback, think deeply, and reach out to other educators doing the same work.<\/p>\n<p>Reach out to your students.
