{"id":24577,"date":"2020-03-15T13:52:37","date_gmt":"2020-03-15T17:52:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/?p=24577"},"modified":"2020-03-16T12:16:22","modified_gmt":"2020-03-16T16:16:22","slug":"creating-a-new-schedule-for-remote-learning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/creating-a-new-schedule-for-remote-learning\/","title":{"rendered":"Creating a new schedule for remote learning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So you&#8217;re moving to remote learning. <a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/preparing-for-remote-learning\/\">There&#8217;s a lot to prepare for<\/a>, and before anything else, <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.me\/p4r2oE-6nP\">relationships to maintain, strengthen and nurture.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One important aspect to consider is how you can adapt the schedule of the learning day to provide structure and reduce anxiety during this period.<\/p>\n<h4>Consistent schedules help.<\/h4>\n<p>With so much in the air, it&#8217;s incredibly helpful to lay out the times you&#8217;ll be definitely doing certain things. While building remote learning, create a class schedule, including &#8220;live&#8221; online times, independent work time, and breaks.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/commlearncenter\/status\/1238563264847642626<\/p>\n<h4>Focus on connections and relationships by holding online advisory\/morning meetings<\/h4>\n<p>Here is a structure developed with some teachers from the Two Rivers Supervisory Union for maintaining normalcy and community.<\/p>\n<h4>Morning meetings (30 minutes each morning at a set time)<\/h4>\n<p>1. Share and review norms, then check-in as a group.\u00a0 Some possible prompts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What\u2019s your weather?<\/li>\n<li>If you were an animal, what would you be?<\/li>\n<li>Tell a six-word story about yourself<\/li>\n<li>Rose, thorn, bud<\/li>\n<li>What emoji represents how you are feeling today?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2. Outline a schedule for the day. Share the learning and assignments for the day.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Consider an outdoor learning task.<\/li>\n<li>REMEMBER to have realistic expectations: academics are a way to create a sense of normalcy and continuity, be reasonable about what you and your students can achieve. Focus on building skills or reviewing key content, not on introducing new learning.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t forget about non-core classes: assign PE, Art, or Music activities that kids can do on their own.<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/StudioJJK\/status\/1238577437363052544<\/p>\n<h4>Here are some reasonable expectations that you might modify for your students:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Elementary students: 60 minutes of academic time a day, 20 minutes a day of:\n<ul>\n<li>literacy<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0math<\/li>\n<li>integrated arts (PE, Art, Music, World Language)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Middle school students: 120 minutes of academic time a day, 30 minutes a day of\n<ul>\n<li>literacy or humanities<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0math<\/li>\n<li>science\/social studies<\/li>\n<li>integrated arts (PE, Art, Music, World Language)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>High school students: 180 minutes of academic time a day\n<ul>\n<li>45 minutes per core subject area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3. Highlight an aspect of a transferable skill to focus on for the day or the week. TRSU teachers will be focusing on self-direction.<\/p>\n<p>4. Encourage students to sign up for \u201coffice hours\u201d or 1:1 connections with a teacher. A GoogleDoc or online form can help facilitate this process.<\/p>\n<p>5. Finally, don&#8217;t forget to have some fun together.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrating the small things will help you and your students with mental health, and distract from anxiety.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some ideas for fostering the relational glue that is laughing and feeling good together:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Readalouds!\u00a0 Read a chapter aloud to your students.<\/li>\n<li>Mindful moments (try the breathing exercise above together)<\/li>\n<li>Jokes and riddles<\/li>\n<li>Morning announcements<\/li>\n<li>Meme of the day<\/li>\n<li>Assign a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/flipgrid-for-reflection\">Flipgrid<\/a>\u00a0dance-off inspired by the teachers at Edmund\u2019s Middle School<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Above all, be gentle and let students who don\u2019t want to engage this way also be okay. This. Is. A. Lot.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/twitter.com\/innovativeEd\/status\/1238470730230239234<\/p>\n<h4>End the day well with a closing check-in<\/h4>\n<p>TRSU teachers are planning a 30 minute (or less) check-in at the end of the afternoon.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Share outs: how did today go?<\/li>\n<li>Reflections on transferable skill focus<\/li>\n<li>Follow up on challenges from earlier in the day (meme of the day\/dance-off\/etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Sign off in a positive way<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It is a bonafide challenge staying connected while practicing social distancing!\u00a0 Let us know how you are fostering community from afar.
