And they’re willing to tell you how.<\/p>\n

Children begin internalizing racial bias by the time they are two years old.<\/p>\n

Yet too many Americans never learn the fundamentals of antiracism.<\/p>\n

Beverly Daniel Tatum, in her landmark book Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?<\/em><\/a>, shows that for white children, racial identity development typically falls into three categories: ignorant, colorblind, or racist.<\/p>\n

All three of those categories are unacceptable. Each supports systemic racism. \u00a0Each supports the status quo.<\/p>\n

We need to seriously pursue a fourth option: anti-racist white children. And schools have a huge role to play.<\/p>\n

What can this look like in action?<\/h2>\n

As the education world seems poised to take steps toward anti-racist education systems<\/a>, it is important to learn from teachers who are already centering antiracism and equity.<\/p>\n

And their students.<\/p>\n

For example, take Christie Nold, 6th grade social studies teacher at Frederick H. Tuttle Middle School in South Burlington, VT. A trio of her 6th grade students led a group of educators from around Vermont through activities in bias-awareness and social identity<\/a> at the 2018 Middle Grades Conference.<\/p>\n

Once the students learned a vocabulary for antiracist education, they turned around and taught others. Not just peers, but educators.<\/p>\n
