{"id":29976,"date":"2021-07-04T16:27:34","date_gmt":"2021-07-04T20:27:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/?p=29976"},"modified":"2024-08-31T07:38:42","modified_gmt":"2024-08-31T11:38:42","slug":"how-a-pto-connected-students-with-community-during-covid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/how-a-pto-connected-students-with-community-during-covid\/","title":{"rendered":"How a PTO connected students with community during COVID"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like so many students this past year, the 7th and 8th students at Crossett Brook Middle School in Duxbury, Vermont, were in a hybrid mode of learning due to Covid restrictions in their school.\u00a0 They spent two days in the school building in small group pods and three days learning remotely from home. The three days at home were extra challenging, as only one of those days they had zoom class with their classmates, while two whole days were alone at home with email based assignments.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When my 7th grader left school at 2:30pm on Tuesdays, he did not return to the normalcy of school and friends till the following Monday at 7:30am. That is a long time for a 7th and 8th grader to stay self motivated and positive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Eventually, something had to be done. I was part of a group of parents connected to our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) who worked together to provide opportunities for students in our community.<\/p>\n<h2>Let&#8217;s get organized<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fall of 2020 wasn\u2019t too hard.\u00a0 The weather was tolerable for outside masked activities and everyone was still adjusting to this new schedule. But when the days grew dark and the temperatures dropped, many middle school parents began to report concerning behaviors for their children. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some kids were finding refuge in their rooms playing video games and not changing out of their pajamas. Others reported that their kids were less engaged with daily activities, not wanting to talk as much to family or friends. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And even more started to share their concerns about depression, complacency, and substance abuse.\u00a0 Students were even caught sneaking out, smoking pot, and sexting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the end of February, parents were reaching out to other parents for support.\u00a0 What was normal? What should we do?\u00a0 How can we help our kids?\u00a0 Do we need to seek counseling?\u00a0 Local organizations began to report a marked increase in requests for counseling and therapy services for our youth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And a small group of parents connected to the PTO decided we had to do something.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a one hour call on a Sunday morning in early March, this small group had developed an action plan. We would organize, fundraise, and communicate an engagement plan for these middle school students based on the ideas that we all know \u201cCovid Sucks\u201d\u00a0 so let\u2019s do something.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Making it happen<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Get Out! Get Creative! And Get Involved!&#8221; These kids needed to play outside with friends, help our community with service projects, and use their artistic minds to create, and so this group made it happen. And it was inspiring!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In two weeks, this PTO group raised over $3,000, got multiple community organizations involved, and launched the program.\u00a0 It was a simple yet effective grassroots effort.\u00a0 The program plan was as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every 7th and 8th grader got a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1RUXVqnkL-1cb1EauRDZruRNRv6Sy480VihPwPUflNQ8\/edit?usp=sharing\">short Google slideshow<\/a> every Monday morning for 4 weeks.\u00a0 That slide show linked them to 3 different activities\/challenges happening that week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Activities to GET OUT included bike rides, forest fort building, dodge ball, lawn games, and just outdoor fun (fully masked and distanced). <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Challenges to GET CREATIVE had students building cardboard creations taking photos of outdoor sculptures, and creating laundryscapes. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opportunities to GET INVOLVED had students volunteering with local organizations.\u00a0 If students participated, they were entered into drawings for cash prizes.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-25-at-11.51.55-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29987 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-25-at-11.51.55-AM-1024x574.png\" alt=\"Screen shot of a PTO slideshow engaging students in fun\" width=\"800\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-25-at-11.51.55-AM-1024x574.png 1024w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-25-at-11.51.55-AM-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-25-at-11.51.55-AM-768x430.png 768w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screen-Shot-2021-06-25-at-11.51.55-AM.png 1460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Slide decks describing the weekly challenges were sent out on Monday mornings.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the end, 85 students participated 395 times in these activities.\u00a0 That&#8217;s roughly one third of student in grade 7 and 8!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It takes a village<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that short period of time, the \u201cvillage\u201d came tog<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ether.\u00a0 The CBMS PTO became the lead organizer and fundraiser for the project. The Town Cemetery Commission hosted 45 students in 2 different cemetery clean ups.\u00a0 The Conservation Commission had students identify special outdoor places in our community and write up short advertisements to why these are special. Hannah\u2019s House, a local nonprofit dedicated to promoting mental health, became a significant organizing partner and funder. The MakerSphere, a local nonprofit dedicated to foster creativity in our community, hosted the creative challenges but also did the prize drawings and the weekly video announcements.\u00a0 Mud City Adventures, a local outdoor recreation group, hosted all the Get Out activities in a safe but adventurous setting. The Alchemist Foundation gave a generous donation for the cash prizes. And many community members volunteered either time at activities or organizing to make the whole program happen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the April school break, one month into the project, the reviews from parents and students were in.\u00a0 We heard \u201cwow, how did you do this?\u201d, \u201cthis was great\u201d, \u201cmy kid really needed this\u201d, and \u201cthank you\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The truth is, it wasn\u2019t that hard: it just took some legwork and creativity.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also punctuated the importance and nimbleness of grassroots community organizing.\u00a0 The PTO group didn\u2019t ask permission, they decided that something needed to get done, so they did it.\u00a0 They identified the need, and sprung into action.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-29976 \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<h2>The new normal<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we begin to return our schools to some form of \u201cnormal\u201d in the fall, I hope we don\u2019t forget these important lessons learned over the last year.\u00a0 Our communities are filled with amazing people and organizations that have resources to share and needs to be met. These real world learning experiences are vital for kids to feel included, empowered, and needed.\u00a0 Kids need more opportunities to try different things, not just more of the same.
