Music City\u00a0learns a thing or two about\u00a0Vermont ed tech<\/h3>\n

\"Innovative<\/a>Half of the Tarrant Institute staff and a special guest headed to Nashville last week to present at the Association for Middle Level Education Annual Conference<\/a>. We\u00a0set out to share with middle grades educators from around the world\u00a0the incredible,\u00a0tech-rich teaching happening\u00a0in Vermont schools. As we always conclude after visiting national conferences, Vermont really is on the cutting edge. Here’s a roundup of our\u00a0presentations about learning management systems, authentic assessment and augmented reality.<\/p>\n

\"Innovative<\/a>The Impact of\u00a0Learning Management Systems in 1:1 Classrooms<\/h3>\n

Susan Hennessey<\/a>\u00a0and Kristi McKnight, a 9th grade teacher from Harwood Union High School, kicked things off with a\u00a0session on the effective use of Learning Management Systems (LMSs) in 1:1 classrooms. Susan’s\u00a0collection of case studies\u00a0from around Vermont vividly portrayed\u00a0the potential of LMSs to improve instruction, transform assessment, and increase workflow efficiencies. She shared how teachers used Edmodo to promote peer critique and used badging to create a personalized and proficiency-based\u00a0math classroom. \u00a0Kristi explained\u00a0how she uses Schoology to personalize instruction. And here’s a quick clip of how she’s able to collaborate with students on formative assessment.<\/p>\n

Their\u00a0presentation<\/a>\u00a0also provides a matrix for selecting the best LMS for you. Susan dug a little deeper into the concepts underlying effective use of LMSs in her research roundtable presentation<\/a> later in the conference.<\/p>\n

\"InnovativeAuthentic and Technology-Rich Assessment<\/h3>\n

Penny Bishop<\/a>\u00a0and I shared how we’ve seen technology used to make assessment\u00a0authentic and meaningful? As schools increasingly adopt 1:1 laptop or tablet initiatives, digital tools are an effective and efficient way to assess learning in real life contexts. We\u00a0explored examples of teachers and students using technology to enable authentic audiences, heighten personalization, and make room for personal expression. Our presentation<\/a> looked at how a wide variety of tools fit the bill, including\u00a0Twitter, Podcasting, Thinglink, video,\u00a0and digital portfolios.<\/p>\n

\"aurasma\"<\/a>Deeper Meaning with Augmented Reality in the Classroom<\/h3>\n

Finally, Mark Olofson<\/a> demonstrated how\u00a0augmented reality can\u00a0make the classroom come alive and connect with the larger world. Participants\u00a0interacted with augmented reality content and learned how\u00a0middle grades educators have challenged students to build games and presentations with the Aurasma platform. As Mark has shared in a recent post<\/a>, augmented reality\u00a0challenges students to transform their environment using cutting edge technological tools. And this quick video\u00a0is sure to augment your understanding of reality.<\/p>\n
