(CC BY-SA 3.0)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Math enthusiasts of all ages are anxiously awaiting the celebration of what many are coining the most epic Pi-Day ever.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, maybe that is an overstatement, but I am certainly looking forward to the fun recognition of the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.<\/p>\n<p>3\/14\/15&#8230; 9:26:53. Two opportunities to celebrate, two opportunities to eat pie, so many opportunities for learning.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As a former math teacher, celebrating Pi-Day was a natural part of the curriculum. Just look up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=classroom+ideas+to+celebrate+Pi+Day&amp;oq=classroom+ideas+to+celebrate+Pi+Day&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57.6343j0j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;es_sm=119&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\">classroom ideas to celebrate Pi-Day<\/a> and you\u2019ll find hundreds of ways observe Pi-Day in math classes. But Pi-Day can be enjoyed by all teachers, and here are a few ways to bring the celebration to other content areas.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, even if you don\u2019t like pi, you can always bake a cake and celebrate <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Albert_Einstein\" target=\"_blank\">Albert Einstein\u2019s birthday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Pi-Ku<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>Irrational. three<br \/>\npoint one four one five nine two<br \/>\nsix five three. Go on.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Challenge your students to write a pi-based haiku!<\/p>\n<h3>Don\u2019t Pi for me Argentina<\/h3>\n<p>Pi and music &#8211; it is a beautiful combination. Just listen:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OMq9he-5HUU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This composer created the melody for their song by taking pi and assigning each number a note on the harmonic A minor scale (<em>Editor&#8217;s note: holy crow.<\/em>) Plus they&#8217;ve made the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sheetmusicplus.com\/title\/song-from-digital-sheet-music\/20044129?ac=1\" target=\"_blank\">sheet music<\/a> available to boot.<\/li>\n<li>These folks set pi to<a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/l6P9103vg68\" target=\"_blank\"> music for piano and saxophone in the key of G<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>These &#8220;enthusiastic math students&#8221; at Fort Vancouver High School <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/U2uVoDxZpaQ\" target=\"_blank\">covered Eminem&#8217;s Lose Yourself<\/a>, challenging each other to an epic rap battle about reciting pi digits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How can your students bring together pi and music?<\/p>\n<h3>The 11th Digit Debate<\/h3>\n<p>Some argue that Pi-Day would be more accurately celebrated on 3\/14\/15 9:26:54 because the 11th digit of pi is 5 thus rounding the 10th digit to 4. A fun topic for debate! Team 5 vs. Team 4!
