{"id":5265,"date":"2015-03-18T13:17:23","date_gmt":"2015-03-18T17:17:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/?p=5265"},"modified":"2015-03-18T13:29:23","modified_gmt":"2015-03-18T17:29:23","slug":"making-civil-war-videos-like-ken-burns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/making-civil-war-videos-like-ken-burns\/","title":{"rendered":"Making Civil War videos like Ken Burns"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Narrating WW Isaac Robbins&#8217; letters home<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/K4pMcj78d_k\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5267\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/civilwartent-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"making Civil War videos like Ken Burns\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/civilwartent-300x219.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/civilwartent-619x452.jpg 619w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/civilwartent.jpg 697w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Ken Burns&#8217; epic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/civilwar\/\" target=\"_blank\">nine-part documentary on The U.S. Civil War<\/a> ranks among the most powerful teaching videos available to explain the unexplainable to middle schoolers.<\/p>\n<p>At <a href=\"http:\/\/ems.bsdvt.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Edmunds Middle School<\/a> in Burlington, Vermont, students in grades 7 and 8 had the opportunity for making Civil War videos like Ken Burns when a trove of authentic Civil War letters turned up at their school one day&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RtG5Et2w0kw\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Writes Edmunds educator Brent Truchon:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Edmunds Middle School students had a chance to dive into primary resources this fall when they were presented with a box letters written by WW Isaac Robbins. \u00a0Mr. Robbins served as a Union private in the New Hampshire 1st Infantry Regiment in 1861. \u00a0Students transcribed and interpreted well over 20 different letters written by WW Isaac Robbins to his family. \u00a0After doing so, students created short movies using the Ken Burns effect. To to so they narrated their transcriptions then selected <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/pictures\/collection\/civwar\/\" target=\"_blank\">complimentary photos from the Library of Congress <\/a>to provide a visual compliment to their work.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K4pMcj78d_k\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Burns&#8217; documentary is remarkable in part because it depends so heavily on incorporating first-person narratives and pairing them with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.gov\/education\/lessons\/brady-photos\/\" target=\"_blank\">Matthew Brady&#8217;s stunning Civil War photography<\/a>.
