Especially if they join up with community partners to tackle local issues.<\/p>\n<p>But once the PSAs get made, how can you help them find an authentic audience?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Go on TV or the radio: it&#8217;s easier than you&#8217;d think.<\/h2>\n<p>Public, educational and government access television (known collectively as PEG) maintain public access television channels for content created by community members. Vermont actually has the highest number of PEG stations per capita in the country: 26 community access centers that sponsor 40 different television channels.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a PSA made entirely on an iPad, by students at Essex Middle School as part of a series they worked on with the Burlington-based community access television group <a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/find-an-authentic-audience-for-public-service-announcements\/#.YlbUBOjMI2w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RETN<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2pJR7wTMXXs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Find the access center in your community through <a href=\"http:\/\/vermontaccess.net\/amo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this searchable map<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vermontaccess.net\/amo\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-5388\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/vcam-300x249.jpg\" alt=\"find an authentic audience for public service announcements\" width=\"300\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/vcam-300x249.jpg 300w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/vcam-619x514.jpg 619w, https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/vcam.jpg 722w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Turn on the radio<\/h3>\n<p>Partner with a local community radio station in crafting recorded and live PSAs to go out on air. Most community radio stations are required by the FCC to air a certain number of PSAs in order to keep their non-commercial licenses, and all of them can offer professional-quality recording facilities. Many stations accept online submission of PSAs, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wvud.org\/?page_id=1672\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WVUD<\/a>\u00a0(University of Delaware), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuvt.vt.edu\/static\/media\/legal\/psa-form.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WUVT<\/a> (Virginia Tech), <a href=\"https:\/\/kpfa.org\/contact\/recording-of-psas-on-kpfa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KPFA<\/a> (Berkeley &amp; Fresno,\u00a0CA)* and Vermont&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20161225022344\/http:\/\/blacksheepradio.org\/WOOL\/psa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WOOL<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150509024346\/http:\/\/www.gmtcc.info:80\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WYTC-LP 89.1<\/a> might also be\u00a0a great place to start for some advice: the station&#8217;s run entirely by\u00a0Lamoille Union Middle and High School students.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Category:Radio_stations_in_Vermont\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A list of radio stations in Vermont.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Power up with community partners<\/h2>\n<p>Community organizations are proud to partner with students on PSAs, and promoting their message in the community will be part of their business plan. Don&#8217;t be shy about asking them to share your PSA broadly through both their conventional and online media channels.<\/p>\n<h2>Approach civic leaders<\/h2>\n<p>The Elks National Drug Partnership sponsors the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peerspartnership.org\/psa.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peers to Peers Partnership<\/a>, helping more widely distribute student-made PSAs. That&#8217;s their whole\u00a0jam!<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Vermont Department of Health\u00a0sponsors an annual PSA contest around the theme of tick &amp; Lyme Disease safety:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">To enter, students in\u00a0<b>grades 9-12<\/b>\u00a0submit a 60-second public service announcement (PSA) style video by\u00a0<b>May 1, 2015<\/b>. This is a great opportunity for students to be creative while they learn about Lyme disease and educate others on the topic. The top three winners will receive prizes in the form of a gift card (up to $100), and the videos will be submitted to play on local television stations.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>You can check out some of last year&#8217;s winners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLk9-Nj2hBiYq2hJ0QfDM3nnI9bNXYLVAp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Collaborate with other classes<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5383\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5383\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5383 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/midtownkids2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"find an authentic audience for public service announcements\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5383\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taylor, Jacquain and Brooklynde, 7th graders at Midtown Academy in Baltimore, Maryland.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>7th graders at Baltimore Maryland&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180730211126\/http:\/\/www.baltimorecityschools.org:80\/321\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Midtown Academy<\/a>\u00a0made a compelling series of audio PSAs <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180802193036\/http:\/\/www.baltimorecityschools.org:80\/Page\/9714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tackling the issue of gun violence<\/a>, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baltimorecityschools.org\/site\/default.aspx?PageType=3&amp;ModuleInstanceID=7629&amp;ViewID=E324842B-E4A3-44C3-991A-1E716D4A99E3&amp;RenderLoc=0&amp;FlexDataID=6361&amp;PageID=9714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this one by Taylor, Jacquain and Brooklynde.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What about seeing if your class\u00a0could pair up with theirs, compare community issues, and collaborate on PSAs? Or perhaps the two groups of students could provide feedback on each others&#8217; work?
