So without further ado:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>What I&#8217;m Supposed to Read this Summer:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/1825391.What_Every_Middle_School_Teacher_Should_Know\" target=\"_blank\">What Every Middle School Teacher Should Know<\/a>, by Dave F. Brown and Trudy Knowles<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/9227301-this-we-believe\" target=\"_blank\">This We Believe: Keys to Educating Young Adolescents<\/a>, by the\u00a0Association for Middle Level Education<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/1913792.Curriculum_Integration\" target=\"_blank\">Curriculum Integration: Designing the Core of a Democratic Classroom<\/a> by James A. Beane<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>What I&#8217;m Actually Going to Read:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/18660061-sharcano?from_search=true&amp;search_version=service\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6348\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Sharkcano-570x855-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"summer reading and reflection\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/6425725-sense-and-sensibility-and-sea-monsters\" target=\"_blank\">Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters<\/a> by Jane Austen (and Ben Winters). Because so many of the classics could be improved by having homicidal cephalopods chase the main characters across the course.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/571283.Cold_Moon_Over_Babylon\" target=\"_blank\">Cold Moon Over Babylon<\/a> by Michael McDowell. Don&#8217;t make the swamp angry. You wouldn&#8217;t like it when it&#8217;s angry.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/18753656-lagoon\" target=\"_blank\">Lagoon<\/a> by Nnedi Okorafor. Sea monsters FROM SPACE.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/series\/93846-jessica-daniel\" target=\"_blank\">The entire Jessica Daniels series<\/a> by Kerry Wilkinson. They&#8217;re stacked on the mantelpiece just waiting for my vacation clock to start.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/18660061-sharcano\" target=\"_blank\">Sharcano (Sharkpocalypse Trilogy #1)<\/a>. WHAT?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(And yet even with all these sea monsters, I am still planning on also going kayaking on the lake. At night. In the dark. Where no one can hear&#8211; okay, I&#8217;ll stop.)<\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;ll be giving these masterpieces all five stars over on GoodReads, but I&#8217;ll also be thinking about what makes reading and talking about books so compelling to me. More and more I&#8217;m impressed by how much reading has moved into the multimedia sphere, in ways that the promotional book video trailers of the early 2010s couldn&#8217;t have imagined.<\/p>\n<p>Take, for instance, this tiny 2-minute podcast episode, tackling Donna Tartt&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/29044.The_Secret_History\" target=\"_blank\">The Secret History<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>[soundcloud url=&#8221;https:\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/207693769&#8243; params=&#8221;color=ff5500&amp;auto_play=false&amp;hide_related=false&amp;show_comments=true&amp;show_user=true&amp;show_reposts=false&#8221; width=&#8221;100%&#8221; height=&#8221;166&#8243; iframe=&#8221;true&#8221; \/]<\/p>\n<p>If I hadn&#8217;t already enjoyed the book, I definitely would pick it up after listening to that snippet.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m also going to be working on my video-making skills this summer, so figuring out what makes a great book trailer is definitely part of that.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_jZVE5uF24Q\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Time to step my game up.<\/p>\n<p>Be safe this summer, kittens, and don&#8217;t go near the water until a full hour after eating or the last sharkcano eruption.
