And so, while we&#8217;ll later this week get to the other two important aspects of Group Device Management &#8212; Behavior Expectations and Communicating With Families &#8212; let&#8217;s take a few minutes to tackle the physical realities of suddenly having mumble-hundred pieces of identical technology arrive at your door.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Time to talk it out<\/h2>\n<p>Sit down with your team and go through and answer the following questions. Store them in a place that&#8217;s accessible to everyone on the team.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span class=\"s1\">Will you use a mobile cart? <\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">Have funds been allocated for one? The key is knowing who will be responsible for keeping the Calendar updated. T<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/tiie\/partners\/?Page=lending_library.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his is what our Google Form for reserving tech looks like<\/a>. Do you have a procedure for identifying how they are being distributed?<\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The fabulous Jennie Magiera (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/msmagiera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@msmagiera<\/a>) describes how color-coding the cases works for her fleet of classroom iPads:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>We have 5 students at each table and have assigned each seat a color. Each table has five differently colored iPads, and so when a student in seat \u201cred\u201d reaches for an iPad he or she doesn\u2019t need to rummage through the bin; they can easily see the red case and get \u201ctheir\u201d device. This helps for apps that save data on the iPad (Pages, Keynote, etc.), ensuring that the student gets the same iPad each time.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span class=\"s1\">How will you identify each device?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We have tried naming\u00a0our iPads\u00a0after YA heroines (true story), and putting the names on the lock screens. This makes it great fun to yell &#8220;WHO HAS <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/89724.We_Have_Always_Lived_in_the_Castle?from_search=true&amp;search_version=service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CONSTANCE<\/a>??&#8221; across a crowded classroom but ymmv.<\/li>\n<li>Super-admin Robin has switched us over to printed labels on the cases:<\/li>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6830\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/labeledipad.jpg\" alt=\"physical management of tech\" width=\"258\" height=\"147\" \/><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<span class=\"s1\">Consider using a numbering scheme that identifies their use or location. eg. Science07, Room107-1 .<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span class=\"s1\">Are your IT staff trained on the technology and care of the devices?<\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">What do they need to know to make this run smoothly? Some educators have take on learning to replace the screen on an iPad, with some even training students to do the replacing.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">This conversation may require a sub-conversation titled, &#8220;Who are the IT staff here?&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Will you use protective cases?<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Sometimes, this is a district-level conversation.\u00a0Again, who is the person who knows where the case decision comes from?<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/what-you-should-know-about-ipad-cases\/#.VeHVxrxViko\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We evaluated 9 different iPad cases<\/a> so you don&#8217;t have to.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span class=\"s1\">How will you deal with settings, apps, extensions, wallpaper images and more? <\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"s1\">Will you allow teachers or students to change settings, have access to the App Store or install their own Chrome extensions?<\/span><\/li>\n<li>In schools with Android tablets and Chromebooks, are you able to manage those devices via a Google domain? THIS SIMPLIFIES LIFE IMMENSELY.<\/li>\n<li>Is there a process in place for students and teachers to request apps?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span class=\"s1\">Will you use earbuds?<\/span><\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Earbuds can be very helpful if students are listening to media in class.
