Found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Sj_9CiNkkn4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a great video about\u00a018th century French military history <\/a>that&#8217;s far too long for your students to stay focused on? Looking for great videos to share with students but stymied as to where to even start?<\/p>\n<p>Worried that editing videos takes too much time and technical knowhow? Or possibly a different platform than the one you&#8217;re reading this blog entry on?<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s jam econo, y&#8217;all.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Send students fascinating, stimulating educational vids with the most pertinent points highlighted &#8212; or even clipped out into tiny mini-movies to maximize the amount of time you spend with their attention spans?\u00a0Here&#8217;s how.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Finding videos:<\/h2>\n<p>Here are some great places to find videos you can use in the classroom:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/documentaryaddict.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Documentary Addict<\/a> (a big pile of searchable documentary videos)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/1veritasium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Veritasium<\/a> (a science and engineering answers channel on YouTube)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.numberphile.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Numberphile<\/a> (educational math videos involving <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180529194753\/http:\/\/www.numberphile.com:80\/videos\/philosophy_numbers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dinosaurs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180618224619\/http:\/\/www.numberphile.com:80\/videos\/elliptical_pool_table.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pool tables<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180519045431\/http:\/\/www.numberphile.com:80\/videos\/eight_queens.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extraneous heads of state<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/crashcourse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Crash Course<\/a> (YA authors John and Hank Green teach history, biology, chemistry and environmental science)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/ed.ted.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TedEd <\/a>(where tons of folks have built lessons around videos so you can go watch Scandal with a glass of wi&#8212; orange juice.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>2. Cropping and editing videos<\/h2>\n<p>Professional development coordinator <a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/susan-hennessey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Susan Hennessey<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Just a few quick tips on how to find videos to support learning. \u00a0This short screencast demonstrates how I use the tools listed below to search for content-related videos to teach a concept, find a just-in-time resource, or help a student explore an interest or passion.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Hennessey\u00a0covers\u00a0how to SAVE videos\u00a0by scooping them into\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/edpuzzle.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EdPuzzle<\/a>\u00a0(which we&#8217;ve covered before because we love it) or <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190112030140\/http:\/\/www.dragontape.com:80\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DragonTape<\/a>\u00a0and then how to EDIT\u00a0them\u00a0with those two tools.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3YnG0adU8Vk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>EdPuzzle gives you the opportunity to not just crop videos but also <a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/encouraging-conversations-edpuzzle\/\">add commentary or questions or a poll for students to answer as they&#8217;re watching the video<\/a>, turning the video into an interactive learning experience. It can also be used for <a href=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/how-to-use-edpuzzle-for-differentiation\/\">differentiating content<\/a> for your students. DragonTape is the quick n&#8217; dirty snipping tool that lets you make what are essentially video mixtapes.<\/p>\n<h3>But\u00a0I&#8217;m on a Chromebook<\/h3>\n<p>EdPuzzle <a href=\"http:\/\/edpuzzle.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can be used in a browser<\/a>, if you&#8217;re on a Mac or Windows laptop, and it&#8217;s also available as a <a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/edpuzzle\/aibecpgimejiilcodkhopfpbelohhppf?hl=en-US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chrome extension<\/a> for use with Chromebooks.<\/p>\n<h3>Wait, now I&#8217;m on an iPad<\/h3>\n<p>DragonTape, unfortunately, has an iPad app that&#8217;s not available in the United States. But EdPuzzle works in the Safari browser on the iPad, even if\u00a0only for editing and adding open-ended questions. Polls and multiple choice questions don&#8217;t work.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/edpuzzle.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7584 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/dinosaur-e1446496211770.png\" alt=\"how to save, edit and share video clips\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Which means&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>This is an area where those of you with students looking for an app to develop could pretty much own the market.<\/p>\n<p>And on that note&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>In Part 2, we&#8217;ll cover the\u00a0workflow for sharing your edited\u00a0(but still great) videos on various platforms.<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Part 1: Finding\u00a0and editing\u00a0great videos with your students Flipping your classroom?
