Arguably, we don\u2019t have good\u00a0technology habits ourselves, but the modeling and mentoring of developing a healthy relationship with technology is a critical role for parents.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Balancing screen time with family time<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t do much (or any) Thanksgiving television watching, but I read in the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/11\/26\/business\/media\/verizon-commercial-suggests-a-thanksgiving-without-phones.html?_r=0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this week about a thought-provoking Verizon commercial airing on Thanksgiving. The commercial features typical families, young and old people commuting and \u201cdevicing\u201d (yes, I made up that verb) their way towards a Thanksgiving gathering. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The point? These include family guides of movies, television, apps and more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Parent Concerns and Parent blog \u201chelps families understand and navigate the problems and possibilities of raising children in the digital age\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/parent-concerns\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5082 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/tiie.w3.uvm.edu\/staff\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2015-11-28-at-9.34.36-AM-300x161.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2015-11-28 at 9.34.36 AM\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common Sense Media may be providing the most robust collection of resources &#8212; there\u2019s certainly enough material there &#8212; but I like this resource, as well: Janell Burley Hofmann writes a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janellburleyhofmann.com\/blog\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about finding a balance between tech and life &#8211; particularly aimed at parents. Her book <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/18594410-irules?from_search=true&amp;search_version=service\" target=\"_blank\">iRules<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has helpful\u00a0content for parents, as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, I find this chapter in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/16131064-the-distraction-addiction?from_search=true&amp;search_version=service\" target=\"_blank\">The Distraction Addiction<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Alex Soojung-Kim Pang to be helpful:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight Steps to Contemplative Computing<\/span><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Be Human<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; First, appreciate that entanglement with technology is a part of life. Second, recognize that computers can affect how we see ourselves. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Be Calm<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; it&#8217;s active rather than passive, being disciplined and self-aware<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Observe what helps you <\/span><b>be mindful<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> online and what doesn&#8217;t<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Make Conscious Choices<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; choose technology tools when it&#8217;s of greater value than the alternative<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Use devices in ways to <\/span><b>extend your abilities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; using them as tools for training and enriching our minds<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Seek Flow <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; find opportunities of when your abilities and the challenge are perfectly balanced<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Use technology in ways that <\/span><b>engage you with the world<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Use technology in ways that are <\/span><b>restorative<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; renew your capacity for attention<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s notice that adhering to these eight steps would result in some sort of Buddhist enlightenment. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the language is a bit lofty for use with adolescents. But the ideas and aspirations are worthwhile discussions and foundations for healthy habits.
